Description

Batik art is a distinctive method of applying hot wax to cloth in ornate patterns, before exposing the cloth to dye, thereby retaining the original color of the fabric in chosen areas. The ancient art of batik, ruled by codes of religion as well as form, was traditionally somber in hue and sober in tone. However, in the hands of renowned Sri Lankan artist Ena de Silva, the batik form comes to life with bursts of color and animation, reflecting her undeniable love for life and nature. Vibrant and captivating, her tapestries in the Mauna Kea collection unfold in a lively parade of peacocks, parrots, hornbills, elephants, butterflies, trees and an array of vibrant flowers. This particular batik, depicting ornate designs of birds and flowers, is one of seven batiks commissioned from the artist in 1965 by Laurance Rockefeller himself, for the Mauna Kea. These pieces serve as captivating windows into the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan artistic expression. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel.
