Thai Sitting Goat

Description

This simple wooden folk carving of a sitting goat hails from 19th Century Thailand. Adorned with metal horns and revealing traces of antique pigmentation, its refined form reflects the use of goats for daily food and agricultural purchases in Thailand, alongside the cultural significance of the animal, revered in parts of the country due to its position on the Chinese Zodiac. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and was very recently restored. Longtime guests may have previously seen this piece on display on the 2nd Floor of the hotel's Beach Wing.
