Leialoha Kanahele was a descendant of Ali’i Nui Kahekilinuiahumanu and Kahuna Nui Hewahewa, a lineage that deeply informed her lifelong connection to Hawaiian cultural traditions, land, and spirituality.
Through her paintings, Kanahele advocated for the protection of Hawaiʻi’s irreplaceable sacred sites and landscapes, including Ka Pae ʻĀina and the dramatic Koʻolau Mountain Range.
Her luminous and spiritual depictions of Hawaiian land express a reverence for ancestral knowledge and the enduring relationship between people and nature, evoking a worldview rooted in stewardship, cultural memory, and aloha ʻāina.
