Indiana coverlet, 1856, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
CDP 25.8.329Description
Figured and fancy tied beiderwand coverlet with borders on three sides and no fringe. Woven full-width; seamless. Navy and green wool with undyed cotton and significant loss of an additional wool color, likely originally red. Tulip medallion and wreathed roses centerfield pattern; urn border on sides; floral border on bottom. Woven in 1856.
Loss of the red wool has eliminated part of the cornerblock inscription, which likely identified the weaver as either J. S. Hogeland & Sons or T. H. Hunkemiller, both of whom used this pattern and signed their coverlets in Lafayette, Indiana.Collection
