Description

Red, natural. Floral centerfield with no fringes. Three borders with eagle in each corner. Variety of red flowers. Sewn down middle. This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in Jefferson County, New York for Fanny Collins in 1848. It is attributed to Harry Tyler. The two cornerblocks read "Fanny Collins Jefferson Co. NY. 1848" with a shielded eagle logo and the slogan "E Pluribus Unum." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of acanthus cross motifs and mandalas; the pattern repeats horizontally three times. It has borders of acanthus scrollwork and tiny urns on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of faded red wool. It has no fringe.
