Description

Red and natural figured double weave coverlet; two panels joined by a center seam; self-fringe on bottom edge only; bouquet border on sides; grapevine border on bottom; flower and snowball centerfield pattern. This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in 1848. The two cornerblocks read "1848" below a star box logo that is attributed to Samuel Stinger. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral centerfield pattern with lotus blossom motifs and secondary floral motifs on a dotted background; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. The coverlet flower basket borders on the sides and grapevine borders on the bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of red wool. It has remnants of self-fringe on the bottom edge.
