This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by William S. Mellinger in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1839. The two cornerblocks read "Made by W. S. Mellinger [client blank] 1839."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral centerfield pattern of round medallions in a leafy grid; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a floral vine border on the sides and a grapevine border on the bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, pink, and gold wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
