Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was manufactured by Henry and Andrew Seifert in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania for Lusetta Lane in 1849. The two cornerblocks read "Superior coverlets manufactured the latest fashion by H. & A. Seifert Mechanicsburg Cumberland County Pennsylvania A.D. 1849." Repeating along the bottom border is the inscription "This is the property of Lusetta Lane." The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a large sunburst medallion centerfield pattern that repeats horizontally three times. It has a floral border on the sides and bottom with tulips and sunflowers. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
