This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Kaufman in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for Sarah Major in 1837. The bottom border repeats "Sarah Major, John Kaufman" and the two cornerblocks read "1842" repeating three times, with tulips.
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of ferns, acorn stars, and floral crosses that repeats horizontally three times. It has a border of small flowers and stars in vines that repeats three times on the sides and twice on the bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red and dark blue wool on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on three sides. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton supplementary tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
