Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in Bergen County, New Jersey for Effe Van Wagenin in 1837. The two bottom cornerblocks read "Effe Van Wagenin 1837" and two top cornerblocks contain a sunburst logo. The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern of flowers and fruit featuring pineapples, pears, cherries, and apples. It has an inner border of leaves and flowers and an outer border of trumpet flowers. The coverlet has a light side and a dark side with self-fringe on the bottom edge. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool.
