This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by George Engel in Bern Township, Fairfield County, Ohio in 1851 for a client with initials C.K. in Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1837. The two cornerblocks read "C.K. Ohio 1851 G. Engel weaver." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern with sunbursts in small primrose wreaths combined with stars and leaves, which repeats horizontally four times. It has borders of birds on branches with flowers on the sides and distelfinks with trees and houses on the bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, green, and blue wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton supplementary tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
