Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Salmon Lake in Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York in 1847. The two cornerblocks read "Woven by S. Lake Fredonia Chaut. Co. N.Y. 1847." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern with flower medallions and ringed starbursts combined with stars and flora, which repeats horizontally four times. It has abstract paisley (i.e. boteh, teardrop) borders on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of rose red wool. It has no fringe.
