Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Henry F. Stager in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The inscription along the bottom border reads "M by H Stager Mount Joy Lancaster Co. PA, Warranted Fast Colors No. 4." It repeats twice, mirrored on each half. The cornerblocks have a floral logo. The coverlet was woven full-width with no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern with a wreath of oak leaves within an octagon within a rectangle. It has large borders of flowers and grapevines around all four sides. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses mauve cotton tie-down threads in a 3:1 warp ratio.
