Description

Coverlet woven by an unidentified weaver, believed to have been made in Somerset County. It has cotton warp in white and blue, and wool weft in red, blue, and yellow. The center seam was taken apart in the 1940s for display purposes, and the panels sewn back together shortly after. The coverlet was given as wedding gift to Phillip Shaver and Sally Mauer in 1840. The centerfield pattern is lilies and sunburst, and the border pattern is distelfink and rosebush. The "Lilies of France" centerfield pattern repeats horizontally four times. The coverlet has borders and self-fringe on the bottom and sides. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses a light blue cotton tie downs in a 2:1 warp ratio. The two cornerblocks read "1839."
