Description

Coverlet woven by an unidentified weaver, believed to have been made in Somerset County. This coverlet originally belonged to Sarah (Mowry) Mostoller and was passed down through each Sarah in the family. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. The "Lilies of France" centerfield pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has grapevine borders and self-fringe on the bottom and sides. The coverlet has red and black (dark blue) wool pattern on undyed cotton ground. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses a 2:1 warp ratio. The two cornerblocks read "Sarah Mowry 1841."
