Power-woven coverlet, 1871, doubleweaveEntry/Object ID
CDP 26.5.074Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was likely power-woven in a Pennsylvania manufactory ca. 1871. It has a portrait of George Washington in all four corners with the inscription "Washington Hail 1871."
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern with a central star on a basketweave background, with an elaborate floral urn border on all sides. It has self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The power-woven doubleweave structure has an unbalanced ground layer of multi-strand undyed cotton warp with thick undyed cotton weft filler. The unbalanced pattern layer combines widely-spaced thin blue warp with red, brown, light green and blue wool weft.Context
