This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Simon Riegel in German Township, Clark County, Ohio for Catharine Xanders in 1872. The two cornerblocks read "Made By S. Riegel Germin Township For Catharine Xanders 1872."
Catharine Xanders was born on April 23, 1828 to Henry and Frances Baker, originally from Virginia. Catharine was one of at least twelve children (Find A Grave; 1850 census; 1880 census). On December 30, 1852, she married David Xander, a local farmer (Ohio, U.S., County Marriage Records; 1860 census). They had four sons: John, Perry, Josiah, and William (1870 census). David died in 1889 (Find A Grave). Catharine moved off the farm and worked sustained herself as a landlord until her death in 1902 (1900 census; Find A Grave).
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has Lilies of France centerfield pattern with sunbursts; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a distelfink and rose border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has navy and red wool pattern weft on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
