Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Charles Wiand for Maryettia (or Mary Ettia) Labenguth in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania in 1849. The two different cornerblocks read "Made by C. Wiand Mary Ettia [Maryettia] Labenguth" and "Made by C. Wiand Allentown 1849." The coverlet was woven full-width with no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern with doubled curling leaves in a rectangle. It has borders of large leaves and lozenges on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on deep blue cotton ground with applied fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses blue cotton tie-down threads in a 3:1 warp ratio.
