This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Brosey in Robeson Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania for E. Kassel in 1838. The inscription "J. Brosey E. Kassel 1838" repeats along the bottom border; the two cornerblocks contain a 3x3 grid of small blossom motifs with three 8-point stars underneath.
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam.
It has a triple border on the sides and bottom of small birds (distelfinks) with stars and trees. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red and dark blue wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
