Entry/Object ID

Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by J. Hausman in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania for E. Schuler in 1833. The two cornerblocks read "Made by J. Hausman Trexlertown E. Schuler 1833" with backward S and N.
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of large floral tulip medallions with diamond motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally two times. It has a floral border on the sides and bottom that reuses one of the floral motifs from the centerfield. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red and green wool on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on the sides and bottom. The weave structure is a hybrid of starwork and tied beiderwand, using undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 4:1 warp ratio.
