Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Solomon Kuter (Kuder) in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania for G. Breinig in 1834. The two cornerblocks read "S. Kuter Trexlertown 1834 G. Breinig."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a large floral centerfield pattern of tulip medallions and diamond secondary motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally twice. It has a tree and leaf border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red and dark blue wool on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on the sides and bottom. The Landes hybrid weave structure combines elements of tied Beiderwand and Starwork, using undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 4:1 warp ratio.
