Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in Jefferson County, New York for Sarah H. Hopgood in 1849. The two cornerblocks read "Sarah Hopgood Jefferson Co. NY 1849" with stars and a shielded eagle holding a banner with the slogan "E Pluribus Unum."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of mandalas and acanthus scrollwork forming crosses; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. The coverlet has borders of acanthus scrollwork on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has no fringe.
