Pennsylvania coverlet by Reuben Peter, 1942, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
2008.1.235Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Reuben Peter in Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania in 1842. The two cornerblocks read "Made by R. Peter in Heidelburg for [client blank] A.D. 1842."
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a centerfield pattern with trefoil cross motifs in a square tile grid; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a tulip tree border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground. The applied fringe wraps around on the sides, bottom, and around the top corners. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 3:1 warp ratio.Collection
