Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by a member of the Craig family in Decatur County, Indiana in 1842. The four cornerblocks have a courthouse logo with the inscription "1842." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. The centerfield pattern has alternating rows of cornucopia medallions and lobed diamond motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally three times. It has floral side borders in a geometric Greek key layout and floral catalpa borders on the top and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has hemmed sides and self-fringe on the bottom.
