This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in New York for L. Hotis in 1840. The two cornerblocks read "American Independence declared July 4 1776; Wove in 1840 L. Hotis." The inscription is partially repeated and mirrored on the outside edge of the cornerblock. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a variant "double rose" centerfield pattern, which repeats horizontally slightly more than three times. The side borders have shielded eagles, stars, clovers, and masonic symbols including monkeys, columns, and compasses. The outer edge of the side border is repeated in two extra bands, separated by solid blue vertical bands. The bottom border has shielded eagles, stars, clovers, capitol buildings, and monkeys. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. The coverlet has undyed cotton fringe applied on the sides and bottom.Collection
