Name/Title
New York coverlet (attr.), 1855, doubleweaveEntry/Object ID
2017.2.010Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in 1855. Based on the pattern and weaving style, it was likely made in central New York, possibly by a relative of the Conger family. The four cornerblocks contain a flower logo and the date "1855," which is mirrored and repeated four times.
The coverlet was woven full-width with no center seam. It has a floral medallion centerfield pattern with stars in large wreaths combined with additional floral motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally two times. The coverlet has symmetrically mirrored borders on the sides, which are similar but slightly different from the top and bottom borders. It has no fringe. The doubleweave structure combines a balanced ground layer of cotton warp & weft with an unbalanced layer of red wool weft.Collection
