This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in Monterey, Steuben County (now Schuyler County), New York in 1849. The two cornerblocks read "Monterey 1849." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern combined with Lilies of France motifs and small rosettes; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. The coverlet has borders of eagles and smaller birds with trees on the sides and a "sausage tree" border on the bottom, with a diamond lattice edge around the borders. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has no fringe.Collection
