Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Jacob Haag in Emmaus, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania for Marian Wieand in 1845. The two cornerblocks read "Made By J. Haag in Emaus For Marian Wieand 1845." Most likely woven for Mary Wind of Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County. Mary was born on Nov. 2 1826 to Peter Sell and Catharine Beidler. She married Abner Horlacher Wind, a tanner. They had four children Adamissa Malinda, Alana/Ellen, and John. By 1860, they had moved to Allentown, PA. Mary dies in 1885 and Abner in 1913 (Find A Grave; 1850 census; 1860 census). The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a snowflake centerfield pattern with acorn motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally six and a half times. It has a potted rose border on the sides and a floral urn border on the bottom. The coverlet has red wool pattern weft on undyed cotton ground with no fringe on the sides and self-fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
