Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in Berks County, Pennsylvania for Catharina Hottenstein in 1849. The two cornerblocks read "1849 Catharine Hottenstein."
There were two "Catharina Hottenstein"s living in Berks County at the time the coverlet was made. Both lived in Maxatawny and were in their early thirties. There is no way of knowing which one was the client. Both of their Find A Grave entires can be found under "web links."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a tulip medallion and double rose centerfield pattern with leaf motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally three and a half times. It has a floral and tree on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, gold, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
