Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by James van Ness for M. D. M. Douglass in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York in 1849. The bottom corners read "M D M Douglass" and bottom border continues "Woven at Palmyra N.Y. by J. Van Ness." The date "1849" is toward the bottom edge of the centerfield. The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a floral center medallion pattern with elaborate floral borders. The coverlet has a light side and a dark side and no fringe. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of red wool; both layers are balanced plainweave.
