This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Schwartz in York County, Pennsylvania in 1838. The inscription on the bottom edge reads "John Schwartz York 1838."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has an oversized floral centerfield pattern that extends from the side borders, mirroring along the center seam. The side borders have curling vines, tree trunks, and birds. The bottom border is a partial repeat of the centerfield pattern; there are no cornerblocks. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and teal wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
