Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by D. P. Johnson in Orleans County, New York for Anna Hiesrodt in 1848. The two cornerblocks read "The property of Anna Hiesrodt D. P. Johnson weaver Orleans Co. N.Y. 1848."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with starburst secondary motifs, which repeats horizontally four times. It has borders of shielded eagles with willow trees on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has no fringe.
