This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by D. P. Johnson in Orleans County, New York for Anna Hiesrodt in 1848. The two cornerblocks read "The property of Anna Hiesrodt D. P. Johnson weaver Orleans Co. N.Y. 1848." Anna Hiesrodt was born in 1827 to Martin and Elizabeth (Vickery) Hiesrodt of Ridgeway, Orleans County, NY (Find a Grave). Anna died at age 23 in 1850 of "Bile Fever" (Federal Census Mortality Schedules). The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with starburst secondary motifs, which repeats horizontally four times. It has borders of shielded eagles with willow trees on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has no fringe.Collection
