Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Christian Van Nortwic for R. L. Holcombe in Asbury, New Jersey in 1849. The two cornerblocks read "R.L. Holcombe C. Van Nortwic Fancy Weaver & Dyer." The bottom border reads "Asbury 1849." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral medallion centerfield pattern, which repeats horizontally four times. It has borders of grapevines with on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of red wool. It has self-fringe on the bottom.
