Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Harry Tyler in Jefferson County, New York for Almira M. Allen in 1844. The two cornerblocks read "Almira M Allen 1844." Almira Wilbur was born around 1800 to John Wilbur and Lucy (Durfee) Wilbur. On January 4, 1821, she wed Gideon Allen (The Wildbores in America: A Family Tree; Vol 1). They lived in Le Ray, Jefferson County, New York, where Gideon worked as a shoemaker and a farmer (1850, 1860, and 1870 census). The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral medallion centerfield pattern with star secondary motifs, which repeats horizontally four times. It has borders of trees with fences on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has no fringe.
