Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by August Vogel in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana in 1854. The two cornerblocks read "August Vogel 1854." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. Its centerfield pattern has a mosaic tile layout with lotus flower blossoms and floral Xs; the pattern repeats horizontally three times. It has a flowerpot border on the sides with a triangular checkered edge and a catalpa flower border on the bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has hemmed sides and self-fringe on the bottom.
