Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Christian Van Nortwic in Asbury, New Jersey for Elizabeth Lanterman in 1837. The two cornerblocks read "Elizabeth Lanterman, Asbury 1837, C. Van Nortwic Fancy Weaver." An additional inscription above the bottom border repeats the slogan "liberty."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern with ornate acanthus medallions with secondary floral motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has foliate borders on the sides and bottom, with small diamonds along the outer edge of the sides. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of red wool. The coverlet has no fringe.
