Name/Title
Pennsylvania coverlet by John Gebhart for E. Brienzer, 1847, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
2017.2.021Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John R. Gebhart in Maytown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for E. Brienzer in 1847. The two bottom cornerblocks read "J. R. Gebhart Maytown 1847." At the top edge there is a truncated border only wide enough for the client name, "E. Brienzer." The number 7 and letter Z are backwards.
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a floral centerfield pattern with large pineapples, leaves, and rose motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally two times. It has a grape urn border on the sides and a bottom border of eagles, flower vines, and vases that connect seamlessly to the centerfield pattern. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
