Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Wirick in St. Paris, Champaign County, Ohio for Sebiniah Boswell in 1855. The two cornerblocks read "Made by J. Wirick in St. Paris, Champaign Co. Ohio 1855 for Sebiniah Boswell."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a large floral centerfield pattern of with leaf frond medallions and oblong secondary motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally twice. It has borders on the sides and bottom of stylized trees or fountains with oil lamps (vases). The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and remnants of self-fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
