Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in Juniata County, Pennsylvania in 1837 and is attributed to Peter Shellenberger. The two cornerblocks read "Juniata Co. Penn. 1837 P.S." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "Lilies of France" centerfield pattern with floral secondary motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a floral border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and remnants of self-fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
