This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Jacob Shalk in for M. Hartz in 1833. The two cornerblocks read "Jacob Shalk M. Hartz 1833." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with rosettes, which repeats horizontally four times. It has grapevine borders on the sides and bottom with an outer edge of small stars. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 4:1 warp ratio.Category
