This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Frederick E. Hesse in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio in 1860. The two cornerblocks read "F. E. Hesse weaver Logan Ohio 1860."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a grapevine centerfield pattern that repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom which matches, but does not connect with the centerfield pattern. The outer edges of the borders are edged with stripes on the sides and half diamonds on the bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses supplemental light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
