2015.1.001Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Mellinger & Son in Lancaster or Lebanon County, Pennsylvania in 1837. The two cornerblocks read "Made by John Mellinger & son [client blank] 1837." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam; the pattern of the two halves is poorly matched. It has a double rose centerfield pattern with flower blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, darker red, dark blue, and yellow wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides. The bottom edge is frayed; it likely had self-fringe, originally. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio. The coverlet shows significant wear and has a prominent mended area.Collection
