Pennsylvania coverlet by Solomon Hausman, 1837, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
2008.1.256Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Solomon Hausman in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania in 1837. Two different cornerblocks read "Made by S. Hausman Trexlertown for [client blank]" and "Made by S. Hausman Trexlertown 1837." The blank space left for a client name has been embroidered with the initials M. E. E.
The coverlet was woven full-width with no center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of floral medallions with flowers, leaves, and small birds that repeats horizontally twice. It has a border of patriotic shielded eagles and tulip bushes on the sides and bottom with a zig-zag outer edge. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on three sides. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 3:1 warp ratio.Collection
