Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by J. Impson in Cortland County, New York for Ann Oltz in 1841. The two cornerblocks read "Ann Oltz J. Impson 1841." The border inscription reads "Cortland County."
It is unclear which Ann Oltz this is referring to. There are two women named Ann Oltz living in Cortland County's neighboring Tompkins County in the 1850 census. One was born in 1831 and was the daughter of Mosher and Mariah Oltz. The other was born in 1833 and was the daughter of Henry and Deborah Oltz (1850 census).
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with leafy secondary motifs, which repeats horizontally four times. It has borders of eagles with heart trees on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. It has no fringe.
