Pennsylvania coverlet by Joseph Turnbauch for William Ropp, 1852, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
2021.2.013Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Joseph Turnbach in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania for William Ropp in 1852. The two cornerblocks read "Made by Joseph Turnbauch Sugarloaf Luzerne Co. William Ropp Penn. 1852."
Most likely, William Ropp is actually William "Rapp" of Carbondale, which in 1852 was part of Luzerne County. William was born in 1828 in Germany. In 1850, he was living in the home of the Ransler family (1850 census). It is unclear what happened to William after this time.
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a tulip medallion centerfield pattern with pine cone stars; the pattern repeats horizontally five times. It has a distelfink and rose border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has red, navy, and gold wool pattern weft on undyed cotton ground with no fringe. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
