This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by W. Kuder in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania for Daniel Quillman. The two cornerblocks read "Manufactured by W. Kuder Trexlertown Lehigh Co. PA. Daniel Quillman 1848.."
This coverlet was most likely made for Daniel Quillman of Marlborough, Montgomery County, PA. Daniel was born in 1811 to Jacob Quillman and Margaretha Faust and was living in Marlborough as early as 1840 (Geneanet; 1840 census). He was married to Lydia Frederick (Find a Grave). Together they had two sons Jacob and Daniel F. Quillman (1850 census). By 1860, the Quillman family had relocated to Norristown, PA. where Daniel traded farming for running a hardware store (1860 census). Daniel died July 13, 1882 (Find A Grave).
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a curling leaf center medallion centerfield pattern. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has navy, red, and gold wool pattern weft on undyed cotton ground with no fringe. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
