Coverlet, 1847, doubleweave; "Victoria pattern"Entry/Object ID
2008.1.249Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in 1847, likely in New York state. The four cornerblocks read "Victoria pattern," repeated 4x.
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern with large medallions of heart-shaped motifs wreathed by acanthus scrollwork and delicate fronds; the pattern repeats horizontally twice. There are symmetrical borders on all four sides with ornate florals and scrollwork. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. The coverlet has no fringe.Collection
