Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Bartlett French in Waterville, Oneida County, Pennsylvania for Caroline Mott in 18357. The two cornerblocks read "Caroline L. Mott 1835 B. French Weaver Waterville." See "Caroline L. Mott" under Web Links for bio. It should be noted that the Motts had another child as well, Edward Eugene Mott who died at 9 months old in 1836 that is not mentioned in the Find a Grave entry.(James Mott of Dutchess County, Ny, and His Descendants By Edward Doubleday Harris). The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral medallion centerfield pattern with blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has an eagle border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red wool on undyed cotton ground with no fringe. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio. Old tag at corner reads "Mrs. ?"
