2024.1.105Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven for Lidia Shearer in 1848. Coverlets of this style signed "A.D." are attributed to the area around Monroe County, New York and may be the work of several different weavers. All four cornerblocks are inscribed "AD 1848" (mirrored and repeated), and the lower left cornerblock is additionally inscribed "Lydia Shearer."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of fruit medallions and birds of paradise with repeating star motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has abstract borders on the sides with acanthus scrollwork motifs, and different acanthus scrollwork motifs on the top and bottom borders. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of red wool. The coverlet has no fringe.Collection
