Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Jacob Schriver in Hampton, Reading Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania for Abby Kimmel in 1852. The two cornerblocks read "Jacob C Schriver Hampton Adams County. PA AD. 1852 Abby Kimmel." Catherine Abigail "Abby" Kimmel was born on July 20, 1833 to Jacob and Hannah Kimmel of Washington Township, York County, PA (Find a Grave; 1850 census). On August 11, 1853, Abby wed David A. Brougher at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in York Springs, PA (PA and NJ, U.S. Town and Church Records). Abby and David had seven children: William, Jacob, Joseph, David, Abby, Catherine, and Irvin. Only Jacob and Irvin survived into adulthood (Find A Grave; 1870 census). The Boughers lived in Carroll, York County, where David worked as a shoemaker and later as a farmer (1860 census; 1870 census). David served in the Company E of the 200th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War (Adams County Independent, April 19, 1918). Abby died in 1904 (Find A Grave). The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a doublers centerfield pattern with clover starburst motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four and a half times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, navy, and light green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
